Bad to Good
Initially gave me and my wife a room below street level giving an odd claustrophobic feeling. After complaining we were upgraded to a lovely room on the 2nd floor. Food and drinks is fairly expensive and the whole place has a spacious step-back in time feel. Reminds me of a cross between the old high ceiling echo/hollow ceramic railway station and the equally old town toilet (but a nice toilet). Get the right room and its a great hotel......oh, and the staff were good and helpful

We were a group of four friends having a good old catch up, we booked 2 twin bed rooms. They both had 2 double beds in the spacious rooms. The hotel is such a beautiful building and the staff could not of been more helpful, the breakfast was scrumptious. We are all planning a return to the hotel.

Fawlty Towers on a grand scale - too much went wrong
5.12.2013: Although the staff were pleasant so many things went wrong that my stay was stressful. First room allocated was a very long walk involving a long wait for the lift and 2 flights of narrow stairs down - no help with luggage. The room was awful - not clean, musty, and with tiny, dirty, cracked frosted glass windows that you could not see out of except for faint outlines of rubbish bins. Got a change of room which was better but internet did not work. Had to call an outside company to fix as they outsource this. They promised to call back but didn't. Tried again and they said they couldn't find out what was wrong. Suggested I get another ethernet cable which I did but it still didn't work Had to go and sit in the lounge to do my work. It was cold and drafty and then the fire alarm went off and had to evacuate out into the rain with my lap-top. Went back up to the room which was v cold because of a heater not working. Staff brought up a portable heater. Went down to eat in the restaurant. When the main course came it wasn't what I ordered and I was then told I would have to wait another 15 mins for it to be cooked. It was cold and drafty and it felt like a long wait. The food was good but the service was hopeless. When asked afterwards if my meal had been ok I pointed out the problem with the main course. Some hotels would have made a deduction from the bill as a gesture of apology but they didn't. The corporate services and drinks receptions looked ok but I would not actually stay in this hotel. It's a lovely old building with nice staff but too much doesn't work and the staff don't seem able to sort things out. Long waits at check-in and check-out.

good spot but bad room
great location, lovely looking building, helpful staff but room very badly maintained, cold and the bath floods when you have a shower (with the plug out).

Ideal venue for theatre trip
Ideal location, vey friendly helpful staff. Cleaning needs to pay attention to ledges which were dusty and windows which had mouldy frames. Breakfast was ok. The room and hotel were lovely and overall clean and comfortable. Would stay again

Good Hotel. Good location
Went to see "Lion King", so the Palace Hotel was a great location for the theatre. Hotel reception staff very friendly. We enjoyed a wonderful cooked breakfast. The bedroom was clean and certainly adequate for our stay. Only 1 complaint, our bed was very hard and uncomfortable to sleep on. Room 3 if the hotel staff should read this.

Très bel hôtel, ancien. Chambre extrêmement grande et plafond très très haut. Chambre très froide. its excellents. Breakfast excellent et varié. Personnel serviable.

Excellent (and thoughtfull)
We stayed at the Palace for three nights and it was wonderful. Good room, endless hot water, beautiful building and very pleasant staff. It was an aniversary break and when we arrived there was a lovely gift waiting in our room - very thoughtful. small problems (bulb, internet cable) were dealt with immediately. Ignore the moaners, give it a try - it was great.

I would thoroughly recommend
I satayed at the Hotel on the 20th oct with my little boy who has Autism. I mentioned that my son had Autism on booking in & asked for a quiet room if that was possible. It was absolutly no trouble we had a beautiful twin room quite a large room & very quiet. The staff were lovely. The breafast the next morning was outstanding it was a type of a buffet with a chef who fried eggs at your request. Thier was lots of cereals to choose from & plenty of bacon sausages & everything else to make a breakfast. The staff circled the room every few mins offering tea & coffee. It was a very busy morning as it had been the David Essex awards & 2weddings the day befour. But you moved down the line with hardly any waiting time at all & all the foodwas hot & very tasty would definitely stay there again

Handy and traditional hotel
Nice and traditional hotel with friendly and serviceminded staff, good english breakfast and comfy beds. Very handy and centrally situated for city walks and next to railways. Pleasant stay here.
